National Youth Service Day -- Saturday April 21

5th-Annual Brownwood Bike Rally -- Saturday, June 9

February 2007

We spent a great day on the campus of Georgia Tech University, meeting and talking to students and attending a
Georgia Tech Women's basketball game (where they were victorious over NC State). The visit was organized by Tech's
Freshman Activities Board -- and they were FAB-u-lous!

On a chilly Saturday we joined our new partner, Sierra Club Inner City Outings, for a trip to Dauset Trails near Jackson, Ga.
We saw bald eagles, river otters, bobcats, a cougar, and even got a glimpse of a brown bear. We look forward to monthly trips
with our new friends throughout the year.

January 2007

We celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by visiting the King Historic District, checking out the exhibits about Dr. King and watching a film about youth civil rights activists at the Visitors Center, and also stopping by MLK's birth home on Auburn Avenue.

On January 15, we spent the day with the senior citizens at Branan Towers, making memory books and interviewing our elders about their lives and their memories of civil rights history in Atlanta.

We also had a exciting evening at Philips Arena, where we got to meet many of the Atlanta Hawks players, rebound balls during their warm-up time, give them high-fives as they came onto the court, and enjoy the game from some choice seats near the goal. Thanks to our generous volunteer and neighbor Kathy Hynes, who donated the Atlanta Hawks "Dream Team" experience to the kids.

December 2006

Our Holiday Party was a warm and festive gathering. Thanks to our many volunteers and friends at Niketown Atlanta for making the day so special for the kids.

October 2006

We had a funky fiesta to benefit EAKC featuring fabulous food and zydeco music -- Shakedown at the Mansion

The kids went to American Adventures and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens to see the wonderful Niki in the Garden sculpture.
Our older girls also started a new 8-week program with GOAL, Inc. (Girls Opportunities for Adventures in Leadership)
to work on positive self-expression.

September 2006

We participated in the One Love Century Ride along with our friends in the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club, who organized the event.
Eight kids and 3 volunteers biked 15 miles of the ride. Other kids helped out at a rest stop, providing snacks and drinks to cyclists.
After the ride, MACC presented us with a check for more than $2,000!

We also performed a breakdance routine at the East Atlanta Strut, and braved three rollercoasters at Six Flags.

August 2006

We've had a busy month! We went for a 20-mile bike ride on the Silver Comet Trail, attended a dance showcase by Dance 411, went to an Atlanta Braves game, hosted a screening of our documentary film, and began a new dance program with the talented Wavie Williams. We are also continuing our photography project, focusing on gardens and gardeners, and dogs and dog owners.

July 2006

We went swimming, and enjoyed an overnight camping trip at Lake Hartwell, South Carolina

June 2006

The 4th-annual Brownwood Bike Rally was held on June 3. Bike races, rodeo and cool stunts.

February/March 2006

EAKC girls and boys participated in an 8-week program focusing on conflict resolution, communication, relationship-building, and goal setting, in February and March. EAKC is working in partnership with GOAL, Inc. (Girls Opportunities for Adventures in Leadership) and Solution 7, Inc. on this program.

December 2005

We had a wonderful time at our holiday party, thanks to generous donations from volunteers and community partners.

October 2005

Hands on Atlanta Day - Branan Towers Beautification Saturday, Oct. 1

EAKC kids and volunteers joined other members of the community in planting and mulching shrubs at Branan Towers, a residential facility for senior citizens in East Atlanta. We also washed two of the dirtiest vans you've ever seen.

East Atlanta Indulgence Saturday, October 22
6-9 pm at the Zuber-Jarrell House, 810 Flat Shoals Avenue

Our friends enjoyed an evening of gourmet food, wine and music, all to benefit East Atlanta youth.

September 2005

East Atlanta Strut Saturday, Sept. 17

We marched in the parade, romped and created art in the children's area, heard some great music, ate some hotdogs, got our faces painted, and sold some raffle tickets. Kudos to the kids at Kingfisher Academy who had really cool costumes this year!

August 2005

Now that school's back in action, we're working on building vocabulary and real-world math challenges. We're also painting, playing some tennis and kickball, and planning our routine for the East Atlanta Strut next month.

July 2005

The highlight of the month was our camping trip to Lake Hartwell, S.C., where we put up our own tents, cooked our own food, went swimming in a creek and in the lake, tried our hand at fishing, and told stories around the camp fire. Thanks to our friend Greg who allowed us have this wonderful experience on his land.

June 2005

It was HOT! We went swimming and played on the Slip n Slide quite a bit. We joined local artist Ernesto and the teens of Camp Best Friends in painting a large mural with a musical theme. We went to the grand opening of Glenwood Park, and saw all the cool new buildings there, as well as the release of some wild birds.

May 2005

Check out these highlights from the 3rd-annual Brownwood Bike Rally on May 21!

Before the rally, we had two bike repair workshops and a safe cycling class to prepare the kids and their bikes for the big day featuring bike races, a bike rodeo and a stunt bike show.

We also learned how to build mousetrap-powered cars and then we had a day of racing, prizes, food and fun.
Thanks to Jason and the crew from Mad Science, and our own super mentor, Eugenia, for putting that project together.

April 2005

On April 16, we participated in National Youth Service Day by planting flowers and trees in Brownwood Park.
We had help from members of the Square Hat Supper & Social Club, Southstar Community Development Corp,
and the Atlanta Jaycees.  Southstar CDC organized a fun festival of sack races, basketball games and balloon bursting and a picnic.

On April 23, we celebrated Earth Day by planting marigolds and cleaning up the park, along with volunteers from the East Atlanta Community Association.  Then we had a little pizza party.  Mmm, mmm!

March 2005

Easter Fun:  We had a great time decorating, hunting and then eating hundreds of Easter eggs along with other
children and adults in the neighborhood.  Members of Martha Brown United Methodist Church and East Atlanta Parents Association helped us boil and hide the eggs and put together baskets full of goodies for us.

We had a fun Community Day sponsored by the Atlanta Police Dept. and East Atlanta Community Assn.  We got to meet our neighborhood police officers, pet drug-sniffing K-9 dogs, jump in a moonwalk, and eat hot dogs grilled by East Atlanta's finest. We also repaired bicycles to get ready for our bike rally in May.  Some great guys from Atlanta Pro Bicycles helped us out with that.

January 2005

We are starting our new Mad Science! project this month. Once a month during this year, we will be learning about science by doing hands-on science experiments and activities with the staff of Mad Science, an educational organization based in Atlanta.

On Jan. 17, to celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King National Holiday, we spent time with the staff of Green Street Properties, which is building a large development in our neighborhood, Glenwood Park. We built some model houses and buildings, enjoyed lunch together, and then took a tour of the real life-size development, led by Charles Brewer and the Green Street team.
