December 2002In addition to our
holiday party on Saturday Dec. 21, we participated in a drumming workshop
at Earthshaking Music in East Atlanta. November 2002Plans to camp out
at Lake Hartwell, S.C. were postponed because of cold and rain. On Nov.
17 we went hiking at Panola Mountain State Park, which has huge granite
outcroppings and two scenic trails. We also had a picnic, and roasted
marshmallows on the grill. That kept us warm, because it was really chilly! October 2002We've been busy internet sleuthing and working on Halloween crafty things like carving jack-o'lanterns in preparation for a boo-tiful October 31. Then, on Halloween night, EAKC went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. September 2002We WON! We WON! The East Atlanta Kids Club regained the prize for "Best Kid Strut." The Strut and Festival took place Saturday, September 28. The kids practiced all month and marched in the parade, ending in East Atlanta village to enjoyed games and crafts, food, live music, and dance at an all-day festival. The kids performed a routine to go along with the Lil Bow Wow song "Basketball" entertaining parade watchers. Earlier in the month, the kids whooped it up at the Bill Pickett Rodeo. August 2002During the Hotlanta days of August, the East Atlanta Kids Club stayed cool by swimming or bringing out the water balloons. They also worked on popsicle stick projects, played basketball and kickball, and watered their adopted trees. July 2002Note: East Atlanta Kid's Club moved to a temporary meeting space at 657 Gresham Avenue, where we will be until the renovation of the Recreation Center at Brownwood Park is complete, this fall. We've been painting, learning new computer games, swimming, and playing basketball. On Saturday, July 27, EAKC participated in activities at the National Black Arts Festival at the Atlanta University Center. June 2002During the month of June, EAKC met at Branan Towers. We spent time working on the computer and art projects and playing games such as wiffle ball. We also beat the heat by swimming on Saturdays. May 2002May was an exciting month for EAKC. A grant award of $19,500 from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation will provide funding that should make transporting kids in the 12-passenger van donated by Holy Comforter Episcopal Church.EAKC went to the Rialto Theater downtown to see a music and dance performance starring local youth groups and professional musicians called "From Africa to the A-Train" May 15.On other days, EAKC met at Branan Towers where We hammered out the details of wooden desk projects, made CD case holders, tossed water balloons (outside), played wiffle ball, and worked on the computers.Speaking of computers - As a result of getting to know the residents of Branan Towers, EAKC decided to start a basic computer training program, showing them how to turn on the computer, use the mouse, navigate Windows, use a few simple programs. Later, when we get online, we'll show them how to surf the net.April 2002CONGRATULATIONS to Cortez Bell. He won the Hank Aaron "Chasing the Dream" award to develop his computer and math skills. He will be attending two computer camps this summer at Georgia Tech and Oglethorpe University. He is the third EAKC Dream Chaser grantee. Felicia Thomas continues to take guitar lessons with her grant money.April 27 - EAKC met at Branan Towers, then headed over to the park to play ball. April 20 - EAKC went on a field trip to watch the dogs of Therapaws perform agility and speed exercises. April 16 - EAKC painted the papier mache snakes and vases We made on Saturday. April 13 - EAKC made papier mache snakes and vases. April 4 - EAKC met at Branan Towers, then headed over to the park to play ball. March 2002
