After an eventful visit from City of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the EAKC's current activities in November are working on our photo books and getting ready for another art exhibition. We will be showing our paintings and prints of our documentary photos at Jake's Ice Cream shop in December. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This month we got into the holiday spirit, working on holiday cards, ornaments and making and decorating holiday cookies. We also feasted at our annual holiday luncheon at Ryan's. We worked on our photo books--scanning in photos and writing text. During good weather, we played basketball or dodge ball outside. October activities included camping at Lake Hartwell, making Halloween masks, and trick or treating together in the neighborhood. September was a busy month, preparing and performing in the Strut. The parade was a blast. We will continue to document East Atlanta for the next several weeks. We view the developed film and discuss what they want to take photos of next. We've sold some paintings and several dozen of our 2004 calendars (cover art, below). If you'd like to buy one, they're $10. For more information, check our the calendar page with the Front Cover photo. Nikia, the Project
Life self-esteem class leader from Emory's School of Public Health met
with the kids. They are also painting with artist R. "Ronnie"
Land (www.rlandart.com). Project SUCCESS, a self-esteem-building and health education program is being led by Nikia, a health educator from Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. On these hot summer days, we're also making smoothies and heading outside for some wiffle ball or basketball. Our newly expanded computer lab (with 12 PCs) is up and running, and we are using learning software to brush up on math, language and research skills. EAKC has also launched "Surfing With Seniors," a program to teach basic computer skills to disadvantaged senior citizens in East Atlanta. Most live in the high-rise for the elderly, Branan Towers. In
June, the G.E.A.K. Fest Benefit (Giving to East
Atlanta Kids) was put together by two local photographers. The two-day
show featured 8 local rock bands. Proceeds will go towards a kids club
art project. We began working on a
craft project, and engaging some of the kids in chess. April 12 was
National Youth Service Day, and we combined landscaping and a bike repair
event at Brownwood Park. The kids learned how to fix basic bike problems,
and to fix each other's bikes. The kids helped to spruce up the gardens
around the rec center. Then on April 19, we celebrated the reopening of
the Brownwood Rec Center with a grand opening and an Easter Egg Hunt. March 2003
