Holiday party! We will have our holiday party at Brownwood Rec Center on Saturday Dec. 18, 12:30 - 2:30 pm. It will include a hearty lunch and games, goodie bags and gifts for the kids. All volunteers are invited, so please join us, even if you haven't been out in a while. Just RSVP so we know you're coming. We will have kids and family members arrive at 12:30 pm. (Note: this is later than our original plan, due to some last-minute developments with City of Atlanta). We will be cooking and getting things ready earlier, probably from 11 am. We'll be
working on more holiday ornaments and crafts and some holiday-related
internet searches today. In addition to finishing touches on our mosaic work at Brownwood Park and some tennis practice, we prepared for our Atlanta premiere of our film. Hands On Atlanta Day took place Saturday, October 2, 2004. We did some nice tile mosaic work in the Brownwood Park Pavilion from 9 am to 1 pm. Volunteer Valisia Lippitt coordinated our HOA Day project. We'll be adding finishing touches in the coming weekends so dress to mess! The East Atlanta Village Strut and Festival took place Saturday, Sept. 18. We marched in the parade and enjoyed the festival, which featured arts and crafts, live music and lots of food. We worked hard -- finishing up our documentary film about East Atlanta. We've also been swimming at Candler Park Pool. We worked hard -- finishing up our documentary film about East Atlanta. We've also been swimming at Candler Park Pool. The 2nd-annual Brownwood Bike Rally was big fun. About 75 kids and adults were zooming around the streets of East Atlanta as neighbors and friends cheered them on. Meanwhile, the kids showed off their knowledge of bike agility and effective cycling at the bike rodeo. Read more about the bike rally in The Porch Press. We also participated in the Youth Empowerment Festival at Brownwood Park, learning how to make and sell our own jewelry. We're working
on the film project and preparations for the Bike Rally. On May 15 we'll
be teaching the kids effective cycling methods in and around the park.On
May 22 and May 29 we'll be conducting Bike Repair Workshops, showing the
kids how to fix flat tires, loose handlebars, etc. (People with tools
and basic bike repair know-how needed). April 2004 On Sat. April
17 - National Youth Service Day - EAKC participated in an event that's
a combination of play time and community service at the Samuel L. Jones
Boys & Girls club in Decatur. The kids also worked on their East Atlanta
documentary film when they weren't busy decorating and hunting for Easter
Eggs.EAKC met with the youth documentary producer developing theme ideas
and practicing interviewing techniques with our fancy new movie camera.
EAKC helped clean up Brownwood Park as part March 2004 The biggest event in March has been the Mural Project. EAKC has been working with other community groups on a mural designed by an Aboriginal woman artist from Australia to be created on the wall of the new Australian Bakery and Cafe in East Atlanta. They learned a great deal about Aboriginal culture and met the mural artist. EAKC checked out a cool hip-hop film festival going on at Georgia State University. February 2004 EAKC continued with the book bags, finishing them with some fun iron-on designs. They also avoided the cold, conducting internet searches on their new high-speed cable access, and playing a few team-building games.
