Cyclists of all ages took place in the 3rd-annual bike rally at Brownwood Park, which featured a series of fun street races for kids and adults, fast-paced men’s and women’s fat tire criterium races, a professional stunt bike show, and a bike rodeo for kids.

More than 250 people attended the rally, hosted once again by the East Atlanta Kids Club. The racing this year was organized by Atlanta Pro Bicycles. The bike rodeo was led by the Optimists Club of Atlanta, and the stunt bike show, a fun new event, was put on by Mama’s Board n Bike.

Races were held on the streets surrounding the north end of Brownwood Park; each lap was a half mile long. Winners of the Adult Citizens’ Bumpin’ Rides were Neil Norton (3 Laps) and Ken Rose (10 Laps). Susan Rutherford and Eric McCerron claimed a close second place in those races. The winner of the Men’s Fat Tire Criterium (30 minutes + 3 laps of racing) was Patrick Jones. The winner of the Women’s Fat Tire Criterium (same length race) was Bromley Metz. All the winners received trophies and prizes from Atlanta Pro Bikes.

Children ages 5 to 15 competed in both street races and in the bike rodeo, which tested their agility, balance, and knowledge of safe cycling rules. The overall rally winners among the youth group were Marquise Weems and Kierra Edge, each of whom won a new bike. Other top finishers were Reggie Weems, Isaiah Sanders, Emily Olive and Laurel Klest.

The stunt bike show feature famed “X-Gamer” Steve Nowak and his Mama’s Board n Bike Stunt team, who thrilled the crowd with high-flying aerials and flat ground tricks. East Atlanta's own Matt Wright was part of the team.

The 2005 bike rally was bigger and better than ever, thanks to the help of many individuals, businesses and organizations. Major event sponsors were AirTran Airways, Atlanta Pro Bicycles, and Turner Broadcasting. Please see a complete listing of rally sponsors and partners in the box on the right.

We had help from 92 volunteers, who checked bikes and helmets, kept the race course safe, cooked and served food, timed races and kept score, spun music, and generally kept things fun and flowing. Racing Director Darren Comer and Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Deems did an amazing job of organizing the event. The rally also featured cycling safety information from Atlanta Bicycle Campaign and mouthwatering ice cream from Bruster's Ice Cream . Steve Sparks the Brisket Man and his spicy sidekick Sudesh Oudi served up a heapin' helpin' of bbq brisket burritos, which were a big hit.

The grand prize of this year's rally raffle was two round-trip tickets from AirTran Airways. Other raffle and rally prizes included gift certificates donated by Australian Bakery Café, Bruster’s, East Atlanta Art & Antiques Bazaar, East Atlanta Thai & Sushi, Fluff & Em Florist, Joe’s Coffee, La Casita Cantina, Little Azio, Lowe's, Park Pet Supply, Trader’s and Thread Zeppelin. Armor Tire, Niketown Atlanta and Village Ice Cream donated toys, water bottles and gift certificates as prizes for the kids.

Thank you one and all for making the 2005 Brownwood Bike Rally such a great day for cycling and community!
