Friendship Connection Spotlight

Joshua Moore and George Smith
East Atlanta Kids Club would like to recognize a very special Friendship Connection relationship between Joshua Moore, currently a senior at Morehouse College and George Smith, a senior at McNair High School. Josh has been George’s Friendship Connection mentor since July 2009.
Josh began volunteering with EAKC in May 2009 through our partnership with the Morehouse College Bonner Scholar Program, where its members contribute countless volunteer hours to the afterschool program. Dena Peake, EAKC’s Program Director at the time thought the two might get along well as mentor and mentee. They ended up talking for just an hour and soon after they were as inseparable as brothers.
One of their earliest and most memorable experiences together was when Josh brought George and his fellow Teen Club friend Matthew Walker to Morehouse’s New Student Orientation (NSO) in August 2009. The two Teen Clubbers got to experience what it’s like to be a Morehouse student. They participated in rituals and activities – they even wore Morehouse T-shirts and fit right into the group of 700 freshman. After that event, George and Matthew both promised they would study hard and stay focused so that one day they too can experience the excitement of being a newly enrolled college student.
Over the past year or so, the two of them have grown as mentor and mentee and also as individuals. Josh says, “I’ve learned to become more patient and that things don’t happen overnight.” He also mentioned that, “you can never truly understand the dynamics in someone’s life, even if you’ve previously dealt with a situation you thought was similar.” This experience has broadened George’s perspective. He says that when he first met Josh, he thought he was “uptight and dressed funny,” but now he understands that although people have differences, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be friends. George says that he respected Josh since the first day they met, and that respect has grown into a friendship. George enjoys knowing that after they work hard studying and researching colleges and other opportunities, they can have fun. Although the two enjoy a friendly relationship, Josh says, “We understand when it’s time to get serious. George understands that he doesn’t have time to waste.”
George’s goals for himself include studying forensic science/criminal justice in college and finding the right school. Josh’s goals for George include him successfully finishing high school and going to college. Josh also hopes their relationship can continue to grow to be open and accepting.
