East Atlanta Kids Club launched our inaugural math and science camp this summer in partnership with
Kaleidoscope Kids Camp of Georgia. Fifty-five kids, ages 5 to 13, expanded their learning in the areas of video game design, architectural science, elementary and middle grades mathematics, careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), science fair project development and food chemistry.

Featured weekly guest speakers included Mr. Adam Prebble from
The Big Nerd Ranch, who demonstrated the space travel-themed video game he created, the
Babysitter Training Academy, who led a Red Cross-certified babysitting course for teens, and Prof. Charles Hardnett of
S.M.A.R.T. Academy who taught computer science modules for students to develop three-dimensional computer animations, dance videos and animated short stories using a free online tool known as
Alice.
Kids Club member Skyler Walker Harris was excited to be a part of the brain-building summer experience. She particularly enjoyed using the Alice software to create a music video. “I loved making my music video with Alice,” she says. ” I also learned that when I type on the keyboard, the computer turns typed words into zeros and ones. That’s called binary math.”

The 6-week camp ended with a trip to Six Flags, followed by a dance party and face painting extravaganza.
EAKC looks forward to another great summer of science, math and fun at Brownwood Recreation Center next year!
