Kids, staff and volunteers enjoy a merry moment at the rec center with the new mayor
East Atlanta Kids Club was honored to receive Mayor-Elect Kasim Reed at our annual holiday luncheon at Brownwood Recreation Center last Saturday. On Dec. 12, Mr. Reed took a tour of the center and got to know many of the youth in our after-school program, as well as their family members and volunteers who were on hand.
Many of the more than 100 party guests were thrilled to meet the new mayor, who warmly greeted both kids and adults alike, posed for many photos, and talked enthusiastically about his vision for strengthening city recreation centers, including Brownwood.

Kids Club youth members Calvin Smith, Skyler Walker Harris and Gabriel Head presented Mr. Reed with gifts that included a special edition EAKC mug and a prized copy of Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” CD. The mayor-elect said he was happy to know that our recreation center is still a vital community space and one in which not only play and recreation, but education and mentoring activities regularly occur.
We look forward to the new mayor’s impending announcement regarding support for city recreation centers, which he said would be released in early January.
Prior to Mr. Reed’s arrival, the kids engaged in a letter-writing activity to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a hearty meal, and then all children present received Christmas gifts provided by a variety of donors, including Cbeyond Women’s Network, the Peachtree Tri Club, Martha Brown United Methodist Church, Holy Taco and Toys for Tots.

The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club also made a $2,000 donation to Kids Club, proceeds from their One Love Century Ride held earlier this fall, in which a dozen Kids Club youth participated.
Also joining us at the party were Charlene Braud, Director of Recreation for City of Atlanta, and several members of Cbeyond Women’s Network, who donated gifts and prepared and served delicious food that was enjoyed by all.
