A painting by East Atlanta Kids Club member Jamiah Troy, 12, was among the top works selected for an international art exhibition sponsored by Youth Art Connection, a program of the Boys & Girls Club.
Her painting, which depicts Ebenezer Baptist Church and includes images of The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his father preaching outside the historic Atlanta landmark, was among 100 works chosen for display in the “My Home Town” art exhibition in September. The exhibition, which was shown in both Atlanta and St. Petersburg, Russia, featured 100 works created by children ages 6 to 18 years old from each city.
The winning entries were chosen by a panel of jurors, among hundreds of submissions, and were put up for sale during the show. Troy’s asking price for her painting was $15, but she was surprised to learn that it sold for $100 at the show in St. Petersburg.
“I feel like a real artist now,” says Troy, who says she enjoys making art and plans to keep painting and drawing.
