East Atlanta Kids Explore Neighborhood Changes in Award-Winning Documentary

Atlanta, GA-October 27, 2004-- On Tuesday November 23rd, Atlanta residents will have a chance to see the award-winning film that recently took the East Atlanta Kids Club to an international film festival in San Francisco.  “East Atlanta: Goin’ Through Some Changes” is a 30-minute documentary exploring the historic changes in this diverse intown neighborhood—for better and for worse.

Two dozen members of the East Atlanta Kids Club interviewed residents, business owners and leaders in their community, asking provocative questions about the changing demographics, look and feel of East Atlanta, and what the future holds.  The film includes a variety of local voices, from barbers and shop owners to Atlanta City Council representative Natalyn Archibong, describing issues of race, class and economics that affect us all.

The documentary was chosen as a finalist and recently featured at the International Youth Media Festival in San Francisco.  Five youth members of the kids club and two staff members were flown by the Salesforce.com Foundation, which also funded the film, to San Francisco to participate in six amazing and enriching days of festival activities and field trips.  The kids from Atlanta got to meet other youth filmmakers from around the world, including teams from Japan, Germany, Ireland, England and Israel.  They were treated like stars at the premiere at San Francisco’s famed Herbst Theatre, which more than 600 people attended.  They also enjoyed trips to Chinatown, Pier 39, rode a cable car and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Atlanta premiere of the film will be at The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Avenue, on Tuesday Nov. 23.  You can meet the young filmmakers at 7 pm, see the film at 8 pm, and then at 9 pm enjoy a smokin’ show by neo-soul singer Sauda, an East Atlanta resident and a veteran kids club volunteer. Tickets are $10.  DVDs of the film will also be available to purchase for $10.

This event is sponsored by The Sembler Company, developers of the new Edgewood Retail District.
