Department of Justice Grant Helping Kids Club to Grow

June, 2005--East Atlanta Kids Club will be able to serve more children and to continue expanding its programs in the coming year, thanks to the renewal of a $39,450 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The grant, administered by the state’s Children and Youth Coordinating Council (CYCC), is allowing EAKC to fund the staff positions of executive director and program director, to expand the times that kids club meets, and to launch a one-on-one mentoring program.

The primary goal of the grant is to continue supporting our children to do well in school, to provide quality after-school activities, relationships with caring adults, and to help them develop their individual talents and interests in a safe and nurturing environment.

As part of the grant performance goals, the Kids Club is tracking the school attendance and behavior of member children. In the 2004-2005 school year, children who attended EAKC regularly were absent, on average, 3.5 days out of the school year, a slightly better attendance rate than the overall average for students in Atlanta Public Schools. More than half of the kids who attend EAKC regularly missed zero days of school last year. The majority had satisfactory conduct in school.

In June 2004, Governor Sonny Perdue announced the approval of 75 grants totaling more than $3.7 million to support youth prevention programs in Georgia. "The grants that fund these community-based programs will help keep our kids on the right track," said Perdue. "We expect these programs to ensure a bright future for Georgia's young people by reducing risk factors and providing positive role models."

CYCC assists local communities in preventing juvenile delinquency through the provision of state and federal grants, technical assistance, training and education.
