Brownwood Bike Rally 2007:
Another great day of cycling, community and fun

Kids and adults of all ages had a rousing good time at the
5th-annual Brownwood Bike Rally, held on a sunny Saturday on June 9 at Brownwood Park in East Atlanta.

The event, organized by the East Atlanta Kids Club, included bike races for kids on the streets around the park, as well as cross-track races for adults (on a course that included both street and dirt trail racing).

Kids also tried their luck in the bike rodeo, practicing a variety of bike agility moves and showing off their knowledge of bike safety.

Among the 85 kids who competed, the overall girl winner of the bike rally was Kierra Edge, who reclaimed her title from two years ago. The overall boy winner was George Banks. They faced stiff competition from Julian Erlandson, Conner Bayliss, Asa Kramer-Dickie, Spencer Rose and Grace Powers.

The adult races featured some of the fastest cyclists in the state this year, as well as some of the funkiest.

The Adult Fun Race included contestants on all sorts of bikes, including unicycles and tandems.

The Cross-Track Criterium races followed a course on the streets around the park as well as a dirt trail inside the park.

The Cross Track - Group A race (for advanced cyclists) was won by Ty Magner of the Fulton Flyers, while Corey Bobo of Cycleworks took home the first place trophy in the Group B Cross-Track race.

The Board ‘n Bike Stunt team returned to thrill the crowd with high-flying, gasp-producing aerial stunts, as well as cool ground tricks on BMX-style bikes.

This year the rally featured a lively festival area with food booths, face painting, arts and crafts, a massage tent (featuring massage therapists from The Rub Club), a huge inflatatable obstacle course from Interactive Attractions, and a design-your-own-helmet contest sponsored by Radio Disney.

The youth members of the East Atlanta Kids Club, which is based at Brownwood Recreation Center, spent several weeks before the rally learning safe cycling practices, repairing their bikes, and cycling around the city.

The bike rally, as well as the year-round cycling program of EAKC, has grown dramatically over the last few years with the help of several key partners, including REI-Atlanta, Sopo Bike Co-op, Metro Atlanta Cycling Club, Pacesetter Steel Cycling Club, and Atlanta Pro Bicycles.

Other major sponsors of the 2007 Brownwood Bike Rally include Turner Broadcasting, McKay Team Realty, Grant Central Pizza, Hands on Atlanta, Inman Park Properties, Martha Brown UMC, Triple Play Foundation, AirTran Airways, Adams Realtors, Avenue Realty, Roswell Bicycles, Pete & Kathy Colbenson, Set Supplies, Tri-Kids, Inc, and the City of Atlanta Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

There were a couple of especially meaningful donations that the kids club received this year. One was from a group of neighborhood kids who ran a lemonade stand during the event. At the end of the rally they presented the kids club with a coffee can full of cash and coins totaling $75.36. Another heartfelt contribution came from Rita and Larry Burnat, who donated $5,000 to EAKC in honor of their son Kyle, a talented college athlete and native Atlantan who was killed in a tragic car accident four years ago.

The bike rally only happens each year with the help of many dedicated and creative volunteers, and this year more than 125 people volunteered their time to make the 2007 bike rally the best ever. This year’s fantastic corps of volunteers included bike medics from Dekalb Fire & Rescue, Girl Scouts and District 5 City Council Rep. Natalyn Archibong .
